The Democrat-led San Diego City Council approves measure giving Mayor ToddGloria hiring power. Critics warns allowing the Mayor to oversee hiring for the City will lead to corruption, and hiring based off of political ideology.
SAN DIEGO – The Democrat led San Diego City Council is now giving Mayor Todd Gloria authority over who is hired by the City of San Diego.Supporters of the legislation say the measure will speed up the hiring process, and allow the City of San Diego to fill their vacancies. Currently, the City of San Diego has over 1,700 job openings, many of which are firefighters and police officers. The 1,700 openings equates to about only 16%, which is lower than most other cities in the country.
Attorney Bob Ottilie has been warning KUSI viewers of this measure since it was first introduced, and joined KUSI’s Logan Byrnes on Good Evening San Diego to explain what else needs to be done to make this measure official legislation. Democrat Councilmember Mari Von Wilpert is behind the measure, with the support of Mayor Gloria. Von Wilpert claims moving the hiring process to the Mayor’s office will speed up the hiring process, but Ottilie says she is telling half-truths.
Currently, an Independent Civil Service Commission is in charge of hiring, to avoid concerns of political favoritism and corruption. Bob Ottilie explains why San Diegans should be against giving Mayor Gloria hiring power in more detail on KUSI’s Good Evening San Diego.
