Carlos de la Mora intends for the prestigious international biennial celebration to have lasting impacts on both sides of the border
,” in which they took stock of the San Diego region including Tijuana and mapped out a future to maximize its potential.
I initially thought of WDC 2024 as a sort of design-oriented Art Basel or Venice Biennale, but it will be a much different creature. Still, I found myself wondering what lasting impact it could really have. I was not alone. Among cities that have hosted the biennial WDC since it began in 2008 in Torino, Italy, de la Mora cites Torino, Helsinki, Finland , and Valencia, Spain , as cities where WDC made its mark. World renowned engineer Don Norman, photographed at UC San Diego in 2014. Norman has been credited with getting the ball rolling years ago in making San Diego a design-forward city.In San Diego, the addition of a chief design officer and/or creation of a design review board are priorities promoted by planning and design leaders as an essential byproduct of WDC, a concept de la Mora also advocates.
Michele Morris from the UCSD Design Lab and Carlos Cristiani speak to guests during a San Diego-Tijuana World Design Capital showcase party at The Rady Shell in Downtown San Diego on Sunday, October 3, 2021. Norman gives credit to San Diego businessman and philanthropist Malin Burnham for the idea of expanding the WDC pitch to include Tijuana — a risky move, since WDO had long defined WDC by individual cities. The Burnham Center is also housed at Park & Market. When I visited de la Mora, Burnham himself, 95, was hard at work in an office not far from de la Mora’s, as he is most days.
The American Institute of Architects San Diego, part of the pitch for WDC 2024 and a partner in the Design Forward Alliance, is headquartered at Park & Market, a few offices away from de la Mora. AIA wants to host a design competition for pavilions to serve as highly visible public icons — they’re a WDC requirement. Some cities use existing buildings, but AIA envisions something more exciting.
