The new deadline is August 18 for eligible families to ask for a card

Hundreds of thousands of eligible California families — tens of thousands of them in San Diego County — now have another two weeks to request a pandemic EBT card with free money for foodAbout 5 million California children qualified for an average of $1,200 in free money for food as part of a COVID-19 program two years ago called Pandemic EBT 2.0. The program was meant to compensate children who would have received free meals at school but did not because of schools’ pandemic closures.

But more than 651,000 eligible children never used their cards — all told, $921 million that was issued went unused.Statewide, close to $1 billion in such funds went unused. If you think your child qualified but never received a card, you can call a state hotline this month only to get benefits reissued.

And some families may not have realized they qualified. Even higher-income families qualified if their children attended a Community Eligibility Provision, or CEP, school where all children received free meals regardless of family income.
