San Diego City Council discussed $6.2 million in grant funding from the county for emergency shelter for domestic violence victims.
SAN DIEGO — The San Diego County District Attorney's Office honored the 14 local victims who lost their lives last year to domestic violence.A candlelight vigil was held inside the Balboa Park Club Ballroom. The crowd heard from several speakers, including a survivor of domestic violence who shared her personal story
Ivette Kuyateh was eleven years old when her mother was shot and killed by her abuser. Kuyateh said her mother was her hero. She said what happened to her mother fueled her decision to become an attorney. She now advocates for domestic violence victims. "There were 10 victims killed by domestic violence abusers. Four individuals were caught in the crossfire," said Claudia Grasso, president of the San Diego Domestic Violence Council. She is also the executive director of One Safe Place, which is a shelter with wraparound services to help victims of domestic abuse.
According to SANDAG In 2022, a total of 17,472 incidents were reported to law enforcement, a 4% decrease from 2021 which there were 18,204 reported incidents Tuesday morning, the San Diego City Council discussed $6.2 million in grant funding from the county to be used for emergency shelter for survivors of domestic violence as well as human trafficking and sexual assault victims.KFMB would like to send you push notifications about the latest news and weather.
