New England's 77th-minute score the difference as San Diego loses in first trip to MLR final
A week after their 32-10 win over Seattle to claim a spot in the league’s Championship Series Final, the Legion faced a much tougher test from New England, a team that went 14-2 in the regular season. The Legion entered Saturday on an MLR-record 14-game winning streak, but the Free Jacks carried an 11-match run of their own.The Free Jacks’ Mitchell Jacobson took advantage of a drop by the Legion’s Ma’a Nonu and scored the first try in just the fourth minute.
Six minutes later, the Legion tied the match on a Christian Poidevin try and Will Hooley conversion. Following a pair of New England penalty kicks, the Legion took their first lead on Augspurger’s 29th minute try and Hooley conversion. Playing his final game before retirement, Hooley ended the first half with a penalty to give the Legion a 17-13 edge heading into halftime. Unfortunately for the Legion, Hooley left injured midway through the second half.
By then, the Free Jacks and Legion had traded tries. Paula Balekana and New England re-took the lead in the 45th minute, before Augspurger scored for the second time in the 61st.
