San Diego is paying out $110,000 to settle two lawsuits challenging the city’s controversial COVID-19 vaccine mandate for its workers, which the City Council repealed this winter.
The controversial vaccine mandate led to the firings of 14 employees and to resignations by more than 130 police officers. The labor union representing city police officers suggested in January that the litigation helped prompt the repeal.Opponents of the mandate hailed the end of the policy, which the police union blamed for the loss of more than 100 officers.
City officials have stood behind their decision to mandate vaccination, contending it made the city safer. They said in January that the repeal was prompted by lower recent case rates. The suit filed by Protection for the Educational Rights of Kids called the mandate coercion and an assault on the freedoms of city employees. The suit was endorsed by hundreds of city workers, including many police and firefighters.
