The region needs more family housing, but there's concern about eliminating fee waivers for micro-housing

The city of San Diego is moving to encourage construction of more family-sized homes. Yet a proposal to do that would eliminate an existing incentive to build studio apartments and micro-units, drawing concern about whether the new policy would make it more difficult for homeless people to find housing. Under Mayor Todd Gloria's Housing Action Package 2.

The fee waivers apply to projects using the city's Complete Communities Housing Solutions program adopted in 2020. According to the city, 87 percent of the projects permitted in the first two years of the program were studio and one-bedroom homes, and 13 percent were two-bedroom homes. No three-bedroom homes were approved under the Complete Communities program.
