Three San Diego Section football teams won state titles a year ago, and this weekend four S.D. teams will be playing for a state championship

Three schools — Cathedral Catholic, Mater Dei Catholic and Scripps Ranch — playing for state football championships last December on the big stage at Saddleback College’s sparkling new stadium.Mater Dei Catholic started the weekend with a Friday afternoon win over Modesto Central Catholic. Cathedral Catholic followed with a win over Folsom.

“After what Mater Dei Catholic and Cathedral Catholic did, there was no way we were letting San Diego down,” said Scripps Ranch coach Marlon Gardinera.Writers from all over the state — Los Angeles, Sacramento, MaxPreps, CalHi Sports — wondered if Mater Dei Catholic quarterback Dominic Nankil was as good as his stats.

And they questioned if Scripps Ranch junior quarterback Jax Leatherwood, who barely played as a sophomore, was the real deal despite incredible stats.Sutton, who redshirted this season at San Diego State, ripped off a 73-yard run on his first carry and finished with 30 carries for 232 yards.
