The orchestra's free Dia de los Muertos performance at Centro Cultural Tijuana in Baja California marks the beginning of what symphony and Tijuana cultural officials hope will be many collaborations
The Nov. 3-19 event will feature everyone from the San Diego Symphony, La Jolla Music Society and Camarada to Project [BLANK], the San Diego Jewish Men’s Choir and Art of ElanPayare, a native of Venezuela, has led the San Diego Symphony since 2019. He is conducting in Europe this week and could not be reached for comment, but expressed his excitement about the cross-border collaboration.
Similar sentiments were expressed by Carlos González Gutiérrez, the Mexican consul general for San Diego and Los Angeles, and by Vianka Robles Santana, the general director of CECUT. “It’s an iconic place in Tijuana to host the San Diego Symphony and this free concert strengthens the binational relationship between the orchestra and Baja California. This is the very definition of cultural diplomacy.”
The performance will also feature two pieces by American composer David Chesky, along with Richard Strauss’ Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30, which was prominently featured in the Stanley Kubrick film, “2001: A Space Odyssey.”“Martha Gilmer and I had a very productive lunch meeting four years ago about ways we can collaborate,” Gutiérrez recalled.
Vianka Robles Santana, the general director of the Tijuana Cultural Center, is excited to be hosting the San Diego Symphony’s debut Tijuana concert in the center’s 1,000-seat theater. Admission is free. “We want to open the doors to everybody,” Santana said. “We are a border region and we need to expand the number of collaborations with all musicians, regardless of their ethnic backgrounds. We hope this will be the first in a long series of collaborations that take place in Tijuana and San Diego.”
