After a scoreless first half, the teams each scored a goal in the second half and wound up in a 1-1 draw before an announced crowd of 6,307 at Cal State Fullerton. Kaleigh Riehl, a defender who entered the game at halftime, knocked in a corner kick by Marleen Schimmer with her hip in the 81st minute to secure a point for the visiting Wave.Angel City had taken the lead just 3 1/2 minutes into the second half on a goal by Savannah McCaskill, who got between defenders Naomi Girma and Tegan McGrady to head in an Ali Riley cross from outside the box.

The Wave and Angel City both had their share of chances throughout the match. The Wave had 53 percent of the possession while Angel City finished with a 17-15 shot advantage, and 6-5 on shots on goal. Wave goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan made five saves. Each team plays six round-robin matches in the Challenge Cup before the top teams advance to the knockout round. The Wave’s next two games will be at USD’s Torero Stadium on March 26 against Portland and April 2 against Angel City.
