SAN JOSE — After a video of the attack surfaced this week, police affirmed Tuesday that a man was arrested in what was described as the attempted sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl in front of an elementary school late last month.The attack was reported at about 3 p.m. March 24 on Steinbeck Drive next to Steinbeck Elementary School, a few blocks east of Santa Teresa Boulevard. According to police, a man “violently assaulted” the girl then abruptly walked away.
The man was found by responding officers a short time later thanks to information provided by the victim and witnesses, police said. Dereck Jamal Boykin, 38, was arrested and later charged with multiple sexual-assault felonies including attempted rape.The attack and arrest were not initially publicized.
A copy of the email notification from the building, and obtained by this news organization, stated, “Recently an assault occurred on the public sidewalk of Steinbeck Drive outside of our community’s locked gate. The incident, which was reported by the victim, was captured by a resident’s Ring camera, and has been turned over to San Jose Police.”
