Sandra Oh plays a party girl and Awkwafina plays a nerd to tackle issues of addiction, sibling rivalry and putting up with the people you love in the new film Quiz Lady.
The newest addition to the genre comes in the form of Quiz Lady, which had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in September, and is now coming to streaming.
And those sisters are played by the beloved Sandra Oh and Awkwafina ."I first read the script, I could imagine Awkwafina and Sandra Oh in it and I was just like, in love," Yu said.The film has the leading ladies playing against type — Jenny is in her hot mess era who is there for the hustle; Anne takes on the role of the shy, nerdy one who is really good at game shows."When you're with your sibling, all of a sudden, you're back in grade school," Yu says.
The film also features the comedic stylings of Jason Schwartzman and Will Ferrell."Sometimes I'm working on a shot or something and I hear them laughing. I'm just having FOMO because I know there's something hilarious happening across the room."Ferrell is a producer-actor double threat here, playing quiz host Terry — who is written as a calming and warm presence.
"So, there's not a lot of like, punchline moments that you have to write for him, just the way that he delivers lines where you just laugh, because it's Will. It's just that timing and comedic charisma."She referenced a line in the film where Jenny — remember, she's the hot mess — complains about how hard it is to be an Asian woman in the US. The twist? Instead of it representing a genuine moment, she is manipulating the situation to be about her.
