A plan to produce green steel will now be pushed out until 2027, the company said. It is already grappling with issues that have shut down the furnace.

Liberty Primary Metals, the Australian arm of Mr Gupta’s GFG Alliance, announced the two-year delay on installing the electric arc furnace on Wednesday. It outlined where testing was up to with magnetite iron ore from a mine near the plant. GFG is still scrambling to repair the cracked blast furnace. The pause in production triggered a 30 per cent pay cut for plant workers. In April 2023, Mr Gupta said he had signed a contract with Italian manufacturer Danieli, which would build an electric arc furnace in Europe. That $500 million upgrade was part of a push toward cleaner steelmaking – where recycled steel would be used as a feedstock in the furnace.
Whyalla’s blast furnace problems have alarmed the South Australian government, which is undertaking its own independent assessment of the plant’s issues.
