My wife called: 'I've been shot, and I think I'm in the parking lot.' (Essay)
Flo Rice and her husband Scot pose for a portrait Thursday, May 26, 2022, at the SSGT Willie de Leon Civic Center in Uvalde. She was injured during a school shooting in 2018 in Santa Fe. The couple stopped in Uvalde while returning from a vacation to offer help.May 18, 2018 — the day of the Santa Fe High School shooting, the day a gunman shot my wife, the day that split our lives into Before and After — started like any other Friday.
That day, the 17-year-old gunman wore what he usually wore: a black duster, the uniform of school shooters, and a Communist hammer-and-sickle pin – just like the one worn by one of the Columbine killers in 1999, also aged 17. Flo tried to sit up but couldn’t move her legs. Her left one was twisted and broken. And there were bloody bullet holes in her jeans.Someone, she thought, was hunting her like an animal.
I spotted Flo. She was on the ground motionless, Ann’s body mere feet away from her. There was maybe 100 feet of grass separating us. I held up my phone. Flo, lying stock still, was on the line. “That's my wife,” I told him, “and she's alive.”He told her to put her arms around his neck, and he picked her up. Then he ran full speed toward me, like an angel with wings, so fast it seemed supernatural.
In the end, ten people were killed — eight students and two teachers — and 13, including Flo, were wounded. Ann, we learned, had been shot as she pushed students through the door. Flo could easily have been the eleventh to die. She finds some comfort, at least, in a large Facebook support group established by survivors of the Columbine High School attack. It’s a kind of club for survivors of mass shootings — a club that no one ever wants to join, but whose membership keeps growing.
