Kevin Gallagher predicts Australian policymakers will shift their viewpoint further towards that of the United States and the United Kingdom and realise that gas will be central in a smooth and sensible transition to a lower carbon economy, and still be needed after that.The Australian Financial Review Energy & Climate Summit on Monday.

Adam Watson, the chief executive of pipelines group APA, told the Summit that a push to remove coal-fired power from the energy system “at pace” was sensible, but gas was crucial for a smooth transition. “Gas has got a central role to play,” Mr Watson said.
