Some of the darker themes of the R-rated 1977 John Travolta film have been trimmed to make the stage adaptation suitable for a PG-13 audience
In 1977, a young John Travolta accomplished the impossible, and he did it twice. First, he made carrying around a bucket of paint look cool. Second, he made dancing to disco music look cool. He did both in “Saturday Night Fever,” the film that rocketed Travolta to superstardom.Brandon Keith Rogers is up for it.
At Moonlight, John Vaughan is directing and handling the choreography, with musical direction by by Elan McMahan. Rogers said his performances in shows like the ‘70s-hit-heavy “Mamma Mia!” with its “disco-y feel” has prepared him to embrace this kind of dancing. Disco, he said, is “attitude and personality and whatever flair you can add. The moves make themselves clean on their own.”
