This latest episode in Saudi Arabia’s attempts at sportswashing no doubt would have largely slipped under the radar had Australia’s Pat Cummins not kicked off a public discussion about the ethics of sports sponsorship this week.
Still, Cummins has publicly said he will not appear in any promotional material for Alinta before their deal with Cricket Australia expires next year. He then spoke in detail about why it’s important for players to have a voice when it comes to such matters, telling the: “I hope when we think of who we want to align with, who we want to invite into being part of cricket, I hope climate is a real priority.
Both, though, were less keen to discuss the ICC’s tie-in with Aramco, whose name will accompany the player of the match award at every T20 World Cup game in Australia.
