A Preston cat rescue group has opened a crisis accommodation service, offering a home for pets whose troubled owners need time to get back on their feet.

Karli* was all set to enter a drug rehabilitation program, but before doing so she had one big concern."I didn’t want to lose them": Karli with her cats Brittany, in her arms, and Don."They've been loyal through all the stuff that I’ve been through," she said. "They’re there when I’m upset. They’re steady and a comfort. They haven’t given up on me yet."Karli, 32, had no close family and couldn’t afford commercial boarding.

Karli said Brittany and Don meant everything to her and she wouldn’t have gone into rehab if they hadn’t been looked after.Maneki Neko Cat RescueA crowdfunding appeal aims to raise $15,000 for its Preston headquarters to continue boarding up to six cats at a time in cases such as Karli’s. "A policeman rang me in the middle of night saying they had a woman with mental health issues, sitting in an ambulance with her cat," Ms McKernan said."When you’re having a crisis and everything has gone to shit, sometimes it’s worse if you have to give up a pet.
