corroborates what survivors have said for years: The denominational officials ignored or downplayed decades of documentation that showed predators were targeting SBC churches.
People listen to a presentation by the International Mission Board on the first day of the Southern Baptist Convention's annual meeting on Tuesday, June 11, 2019, in Birmingham.5 explosive takeaways from the new 400-page report Many of the executive committee members named in the report have retired or resigned last year amid contentious debates over whether to allow Guidepost full access to legally protected documents, as was demanded by SBC churches when they commissioned the inquiry.
The Tuesday meeting is likely to include discussions about policies proposed by Guidepost and the SBC task force that assisted them with the investigation. Among them: A database of abusive ministers that churches could consult when hiring, and which survivors have said for years is crucial to stopping predators in the SBC, a collective of 47,000 churches with no uniform ordination standards that shares almost no information between churches.
The database idea was dismissed in 2008 by executive committee members. The Guidepost report found that, at the same time they were pushing back against that oversight mechanism, committee members — namely longtime legal counsel August"Augie" Boto — had been collecting their own, internal list of accused abusers.
