The resignation of his hand-picked ethics adviser is the latest blow for Mr Johnson, who survived a no-confidence vote by his own Conservative Party last week. He has been left a weakened leader after 41 per cent of Conservative MPs voted to remove him.

“For the prime minister to lose one adviser on ministers’ interests may be regarded as a misfortune. To lose two looks like carelessness,” said Conservative MP William Wragg, a critic of Mr Johnson.
