The emergence of Trump-like scare campaigns is fuelling distrust in government, eroding the social licence the public sector needs to be effective., after claiming that a plan for a much-needed upgrade for the technology back office for Medicare was in fact a stalking horse for the privatisation of the program.

In both cases, the substance of the scare was highly dubious, but was aggressively pushed through social media channels, amenable media outlets and surrogates., Anne Ruston, about the sustainability of Medicare, meant the universal scheme was under threat by the Coalition.Ruston was also at the centre of claims that aged and disability pensioners would be required to use a debit card that limits spending on items such as alcohol and gambling.

The modelling that allegedly supported this figure was not released, but that did not stop two News Corp tabloids from splashing the claim on their front pages.
