Schmitz turned to skating as a release after her grandmother’s death and was also there to help Taylor through his personal challenges. Ashlyn Schmitz was flying high with partner Tristan Taylor during a recent practice at the Co-operators Centre.The two performed at a high level in a number of figure skating events despite the losses. They were competing in their first Junior ISU Grand Prix in Riga, Latvia, while Robert Taylor was in the hospital. They finished third in that event before returning to Regina in time for Tristan to say farewell to his dad.

In January, they finished fourth in junior pairs at the Canadian championships in Oshawa. That performance qualified them for the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships from Feb. 27 to March 5 at Calgary’s WinSport Event Centre.Article content
