Worse still Monique says she knows some of the boys involved – one has even been in her home."Just absolutely shocking." Monique said she contacted the school, Mansfield High, only to be told that it is a police matter which happened outside the school gate and the school won't comment for privacy reasons.
"I believe schools can't hide behind this attitude of what happens beyond the school gate we can't stop," Andrew said.Andrew Jay is a teacher. He said that he sees bullying everyday, and understands how difficult it is to stop. Monique said Adam, who suffers from anxiety, had been bullied during his first year in high school but was too afraid to report it to even his parents. "I felt he was vulnerable and just having anxiety you are socially more awkward. So you are not seen to be able to stand up for yourself," said Monique. Psychologist Dr Karen Phillips says she doubts Adam will ever be able to set foot in the school again. "Often these kids that enact this type of assault and behaviour don't stop at one victim, they continue to others and that's my concern," Dr Phillips toldAdam's father is a relief teacher and said bullying is an epidemic. He believes schools need to be like football clubs who take action against players who misbehave in public. Mother Monique had to call the ambulance for her son after she discovered him calling out for her at home. "The bullying wears you down. It's exhausting. It's disheartening, it's sad, it's tough, you know. I struggle with it sometimes."In the meantime, Monique Jay has spent three weeks at her son's bedside."I only hope schools do something to stop the bullying because whatever they are doing now isn't working."A spokesperson for the Queensland Department of Education issued A Current Affair with the below statement:The Department of Education will continue to cooperate with the Queensland Police Service's ongoing investigation into this matter.clearly sets out the expectations about staff responsibilities to support students to understand and meet discipline expectations of the school, and guidance on the application, where required, of disciplinary consequences. Queensland state schools have a range of support services available, such as guidance officers, youth support coordinators and school-based youth health nurses all of whom can refer students to appropriate supports within the school and community as required. The school has worked extensively with the student and their family, and will continue to provide all necessary support.
