Thousands of students are fighting to get their deposits back after Schoolies was cancelled, claiming they've been ripped off by an online booking company. 9News

"It's something at the end of the year we reward ourselves with and it's unfortunate it can't happen, to be honest with you," Mr Mousalino said.

Instead they can exchange it for a credit voucher which can be used in the various ways stipulated on their website. The petition, which now has more than a thousand signatures, was created by 17-year-old Joel Burgess. "I don't really want to pay $1200 per person to go sit in a room where we are not really allowed to celebrate," Karter said.

School leaver Karter McEwan and father Michael McEwan want a full refund on the $150 deposit paid to schoolies.com. "My biggest fear is that we are still going to have thousands of Schoolies and there's not going to be any governmental support in police numbers or support for the groups that help keep Schoolies safe," Mr Langbroek said.
