Research shows that music engagement in the early years and onwards helps make people more active, more engaged and more creative.
Experts say the situation is worsening over time, despite extensive international research that links engagement with music to improvements in literacy, logic and memory, as well as self-regulation and social cohesion. It teaches kids how to collaborate to achieve a common goal while providing a creative, and even physical and emotional, outlet.
“There is plenty of research showing that music education and engagement in the early years and onwards helps make people more active, more engaged and more creative,” Professor Sahlberg said.The situation appears to have worsened since 2003. That was when Professor Sahlberg, freshly arrived from Finland and enrolling his children in the public primary school, realised just how dire the situation was.

In Finland, students have compulsory music education from the age of six to 12 for two to four hours a week, which builds upon music education in day care or preschool of around 20-60 minutes a day.
