The Australian government’s veto of six research grants is ignorant of one of the basic tenets of science: freedom and trust will be richly rewarded in the long-term.
Science is supposed to be useful. Such an expectation is nothing new, but in the face of a pandemic and climate change it has, perhaps, never been truer than it is today. And with the aid of revolutionary mRNA technology, science did indeed manage to develop an effective weapon against the virus in record time.
There are many such examples in which this process of acquiring scientific knowledge leads to completely unplanned discoveries that unexpectedly turn out to be of enormous importance at a later stage.was the title chosen for a paper on the subject by Abraham Flexner, the first secretary general of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, in 1939.
During times in which society sets great store by usefulness, it requires vision and backbone on the part of policymakers to afford science this freedom. Fundamental research needs money and patience. Many researchers who come to Germany from abroad appreciate the freedom and generous support they receive here.Bloomberg Innovation Index
