Designing food for space was once the stuff of science fiction movies but scientists in South Australia are now doing just that.
"The amount of work that needs to be done to get plants ready for being that nutritional source for space is probably going to take at least 10 years, so we have to start now," Professor Gilliham said.
Crops are being designed using genetic modification technology, where foreign DNA is introduced to a plant, changing its genetic makeup. The level of acceptance of genetically modified crops, on earth at least, varies greatly across industries and among the public., bringing them into line with the rest of the mainland states.
"It was a great occasion, I thought, for South Australia to finally catch up with the other states," he said.Mr Morcom was keen to invest in herbicide-resistant GM canola to try and improve his weed control."There's just so much more breeding that plant breeders can breed into their crops," he said."If we could get some frost tolerance into our crops, that would be worth billions.
