Species which once roamed freely now thrive in a fenced-in safe haven created in Sturt National Park, part of one of the world's biggest mammal reintroduction projects.
abc.net.au/news/threatened-mammals-thrive-in-nsw-fenced-in-zone-experiment/102685304It's early morning just before sunrise and a group of scientists is walking along a dusty red track to a series of lures they set the night before.
Rebecca West crouches down to open a small cage where the bilby has been caught. She scans it for a microchip but there isn't one. It means only one thing. It's the type of find that fills these ecologists with excitement and relief because it means one part of their experiment is working. "They're prolific breeders, they're clearly really enjoying the habitat here and are doing well so we're already getting this next generation of golden bandicoots here," she said. This experiment is called Wild Deserts and it's run by the University of NSW in partnership with NSW Parks and Wildlife. To do that, scientists have built a 40 square kilometre fenced-in zone.
