Separatist First Minister Nicola Sturgeon sets up a showdown with embattled Prime Minister Boris Johnson over whether the referendum would even be legal.
| Scotland plans to hold a new referendum on breaking away from the United Kingdom on October 19, 2023, the country’s separatist First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced.
Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon outlines to the Holyrood parliament her plan for a second independence referendum. She also acknowledged that her regional government would first have to ascertain whether the proposed referendum was legal at all, by applying to the UK Supreme Court. The court papers were filed on Tuesday .
The SNP won 64 seats in that election, one more than previously but one short of a majority in the 129-seat Holyrood parliament. Ms Sturgeon said the result had given her a mandate for Indyref2. In the past three polls, two put support for independence at 45 per cent and one at 38 per cent. It was as high as 50 per cent in early February, but is otherwise typically stuck in the mid-40s.Opposition to independence was 46 or 47 per cent in each of the past three polls. The ‘no’ vote is typically very steady in the opinion polls, at between 47 and 49 per cent.
Mr Johnson will most probably refuse to cooperate with the Indyref2 plan. Ms Sturgeon will use this to press on with the vote - she will claim it proves her case that London ignores the wishes and interests of Scotland. The ‘no’ campaign responded by stoking Scottish anxieties about losing the sterling currency, the UK naval shipyards, the single British market in financial services, and the seamless land border with England.
