The Scottish National Party (SNP) Government has decided to provide pensioners with fuel payments ranging from £100 to £300 next winter, overturning the Labour party's means-testing plan. Social Justice Cabinet Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville has introduced a two-tier payment system, set to commence in the following year, ensuring all pensioners will receive financial aid to heat their homes. This decision comes as a response to the UK Labour Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ plan to cut eligibility for the Winter Fuel Payment, a move criticized for leaving 900,000 Scots without support amid rising energy bills and an expected harsh winter.
