Mum Kat Waddell said she decided before he was born to call her son William, after William Wallace, as he is 'her Braveheart'.

A Scots mum has spoken of her pride in her teenage son, who spent the first three years of his life in hospital, after being diagnosed with a rare heart condition in the womb. William Kilpatrick was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot before his birth.

William spent the first three years of his life in and out of Yorkhill Hospital after being diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot, which causes a number of problems with the heart, while he was in the womb at 27 weeks. Before the age of four, William had undergone four major heart surgeries - including needing a shunt to replace a heart valve after birth.

“The team at the Royal Hospital for Children have become like family and a huge support network for me over the years. I am so grateful for everything that they do. William calls the nurses and doctors his aunties and uncles. There have been times where we haven’t had appointments and William has requested to go to the hospital for a visit."
