Scots voters 'more polarised than ever' on independence question

The annual British Social Attitudes survey found that divisions on constitutional reform have grown over the last decade.

While 82 per cent of SNP voters are firmly in favour of independence, just five per cent of Conservatives are.

The survey also found that when asked to choose between independence, devolution and no Scottish Parliament, 52 per cent of Scots favoured independence - up from 23 per cent in 2012. "That will not make it easier to secure widespread assent to whatever outcome emerges from the current debate." "Far from representing a set of conventions and procedures on which most people agree, the UK’s constitution appears at risk of becoming a political battlefield on which the parties seek electoral advantage."
