The national coach reckons Erik ten Hag should be grateful to the midfielder for helping him during a time of need.
John Carver knows the Tartan Army thank their lucky stars Scott McTominay is doing the business for Scotland.
“Think about the game against Spain. Rodri is one of the best midfielders in the world and yet Scott was on that same stage, competing with him and excelling against him. He must have thought, ‘Rodri is one of the best players in the world, I can compete with him and be on the same stage’. He has gone back to Man Utd with so much determination and it’s helped us. It’s great he’s playing all the time. Before the European campaign started he wasn’t getting a great deal of game time.
“He’s gone back and fought his way into that Man Utd team and now the manager is delighted. He’s got him in the team and there were a few games where he saved his job I think. He is an example of a player who has gone away to his club, worked extremely hard and he can fit into the system we want to play.
Ans Carver reckons some of that big-club attitude can rub off on his international team-mates as they gear up for taking on Holland in Amsterdam tomorrow evening. The coach said: “He’s a great lad and your typical Man United player. He’s got the personality to play for Man United, that’s why you’re there.
“You see the different, more offensive role we give him with less restriction on getting forward. Scott has thrivedMcTominay will need to be at his best in the Amsterdam Arena tomorrow against a Dutch side that can be difficult to predict. They have blown hot and cold in recent years and while they might not be at the level of famous sides of the past, Carver knows they have plenty on the pitch to give Scotland problems.
