Prime Minister Scott Morrison has conceded climate change contributed to the bushfires and smoke that have plagued the nation for months.

, which looks at national climate action internationally, deemed the Morrison government a “regressive force”, saying the re-elected Morrison government “has continued to worsen performance at both national and international levels”.

“We also know that there are many contributing factors that relate to these fires. The drought is obviously one, and the dryness of the bush is the biggest factor,” he said. He added: “But let me be clear about this — climate change is a global challenge. Australia is playing our role as part of this global challenge. In fact, I can tell you that emissions from Australia are lower today than at any other time than before we came to government.

“This is not normal and doing nothing is not a solution. If this is not a catalyst for change, then I don’t know what is. Firefighters union representative Leighton Dury told the crowd that as a firey for 20 years, he was qualified to say these are “the worst fires we have had in decades”. Natural Disaster and Emergency Management Minister David Littleproud said it would allow annual lease periods of firefighting aircraft to be extended.
