Scott Morrison finishes every interview with a hearty "thank you", usually addressed to the interviewer.

"Thanks a lot, Leila, it was good to be with you," the Prime Minister will say, or "Thanks very much, Michael." It's a personalised touch that also serves as a sign of strength: the interview has gone well and Morrison wants to show that he's the magnanimous victor.Alex Ellinghausen Television audiences, who've been following the Prime Minister's recent appearances with urgent interest amid the bushfire crisis, are often not nearly as grateful.

We live in a partisan political age and Morrison is a fitting leader for that divide. He is virtually always on message, and long has been. Predecessors such as Kevin Rudd and Malcolm Turnbull had a loquacious streak, underpinned by a belief that they were the smartest person in a nation-sized room, while Tony Abbott sometimes seemed unsure what he was fighting against.
