Food waste has risen by five per cent since 2013 despite a Holyrood target to slash it by 33 per cent by 2025.

The Scottish Government and its agencies have spent £1.6million encouraging Scots to reduce food waste since 2016 - but instead of falling, it’s risen by five per cent.

And its arms-length quango Zero Waste Scotland spent an additional £897,000 of taxpayer’s cash since September 2017 on “communications for food waste reduction activities” - for a total of £1.63million. It comes as brown compost bins for food waste are not consistently available and collected for all households in Scotland, including in its most populous city Glasgow.

“It’s incredible that ministers have splurged almost £750,000 on food waste spin to such little effect.“It calls into serious question the SNP-Green strategy for cutting food waste and its ability to get through to the public.
