Dallas considers Lance a player with tremendous upside that can push Cooper Rush, the No. 2 quarterback.
“We grade quarterbacks every year. Mike encouraged and we’re all for, been wanting to draft a quarterback for the last three drafts. The problem is, we put third- and fourth-round grades on guys and they’re all gone by halfway through the second round. People get these guys. This was a great opportunity, we think, value-wise, to get a guy has a bright future. We believe in our scouts, as you all well know. We believe in our board. This guy was way up our board.
Jones said his scouts were impressed with Lance’s performance in the season-opening game at Chicago. During a steady rain, which turned into a downpour in the second half, Lance completed 13 of 28 passes for 164 yards with one interception and no touchdowns. In the Week 2 game against Seattle, played in a light rain, Lance completed just two of three passes before suffering an ankle injury on a run play. After missing the rest of the 2022 season, Lance was the starter in the first 2023 preseason game. After a shaky start, he completed 10 of 15 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown. In the two preseason games, Lance completed 66.7% of his passes for 285 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
“Hadn’t gotten to play a lot,” Jones said of Lance. “He was injured last year and was a rookie the first year. At the end of the day, we’re really trusting exactly what we thought of him coming out.”
