David Arquette looks back on the moment he learned his iconic Scream character Dewey Riley was going to die: 'I had to put it down, I had to walk around and kind of process it.' 😢😭
David Arquette reveals his first reaction to reading Dewey's heartbreaking death scene in Scream. Earlier this year, audiences journeyed back to the town of Woodsboro for Scream as a new wave of terror tore through its residents.
Scream 2022 was the fifth installment in the much-loved horror franchise and saw Campbell, Cox, and Arquette all return to reprise their legacy roles. The film also welcomed a whole host of fresh faces, including the likes of In The Heights' Melissa Barrera and The Boys' Jack Quaid.
I haven’t talked about it much. It’s a very fresh wound. They had not given me a heads-up, so I was like [mimes thumbing through the script], ‘Wow, Dewey’s got some good stuff to play this time!’ And then, ‘Oh, that’s why!’ I had to put it down, I had to walk around and kind of process it. I understood where they were coming from, as far as gutting their audience. It was hard. It’s been such an ongoing film series throughout my life, 25 years of my life, so it definitely cut deep.
Arquette also offered some insight on what it was like when the day finally came to shoot his Scream death scene, revealing that he had to get into"a Zen place" to deal with the discomfort that comes with being soaked in fake blood all day long. Arquette then shared that upon wrapping the scene, he simply"hopped in [his] car, drove home, washed all the blood off, and that was it.
With Scream 6 now officially in its early stages, audiences are waiting to hear just who will return for this exciting follow-up. While Dewey's death was an emotional one, it certainly upped the stakes by making the so-called 'unkillable trio' appear considerably less untouchable.
