While at SDCC2023, Screen Rant spoke to StrangePlanet creator nathanwpyle about how the original webcomic came to be, what it's been like working with Dan Harmon, and his feelings on the process of adapting it into an AppleTV animated series:
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Strange Planet began as a webcomic in 2019 and follows strange blue beings as they learn to understand the intricacies of human traditions and behaviors. Tapping into the inherent strangeness of humanity, this comic quickly gained traction online. It has now been adapted into an animated series.
Nathan Pyle: Oh, man. We started Strange Planet in 2019. My wife and I were in tiny New York City apartment. And we started drawing these comics. I did one a day for an entire year and it grew pretty big on the internet. And in that year, we decided to pitch. We were with Dan Harmon and Steve Levy. Right away, we're six months in, and we pitched them on it and they wanted to work together. It is been a work in progress since then. Now, it's finally coming out August 9th.
I want to dive into that a little bit because I find that very interesting. Can you talk to me about working in that medium of animation, because that is different than making a 2D comic. Can you just talk to me about the adaptation process? Can you talk about the casting process? Are these the voices that you heard in your head when doing the webcomic?
Nathan Pyle: Oh, well, this is a planet that's not earth. And you'll see immediately within the first 30 seconds, you'll see this is not Earth. And I think that's what's neat about this. You'll see immediately there's familiarity there, but there are some things that are different on this planet. And when you're getting a glimpse into the lives of these beings, you're just there as a visitor.
