Before Sean Payton could start his coaching career, he had to figure out how to get out of Colorado.

The new Broncos head coach was driving from Naperville, Illinois, to San Diego in 1988, ahead of his first coaching job as a graduate assistant at San Diego State. As he headed westbound into the mountains past Denver his Chevrolet Cavalier stopped running.

Payton did get his Cavalier repaired upon his arrival in San Diego, where the young-and-hungry coach quickly went to work trying to make a name for himself on the Aztec staff. The former star quarterback at Eastern Illinois slept on a cot in the team facility during his first six months on the job at SDSU.

Payton leveraged those two years as a GA at San Diego State into a position at Indiana State, coaching quarterbacks and running backs starting in 1990. His career; he bounced around the college scene until 1997, when at age 34 he became the quarterbacks coach for the Eagles.
