A Cessna 208 Caravan seaplane crashed near Thomson Bay on Rottnest Island, Australia, killing the pilot, James Wong, and two foreign tourists. A pilot killed along with two passengers in a sea plane crash off Rottnest Island on Tuesday has been identified as 34-year-old James Wong. Wong and two foreign tourists died when the Cessna 208 Caravan aircraft he was flying is understood to have struck the small outcrop of Phillip Rock near Thomson Bay as it took off about 4pm. Four people were helped from the water after the crash, including three who were taken to hospital with a range of injuries.

Swan River Seaplanes director Kristy Bailey said Wong was a “dedicated pilot”. “We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of James, a talented and dedicated pilot who was an integral and deeply cherished member of our team,” she said. “Our hearts and thoughts are with his family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.” Bailey also offered condolences to loved ones of the dead passengers — a 65-year-old Swiss woman, and a 60-year-old Danish man — and four survivors. “We are devastated by those injured and the loss of the two passengers involved in the terrible incident yesterday,” she said. “Our deepest and sincere condolences are with their families and friends.” Swan River Seaplanes operates daily scenic services between its base in South Perth and Rottnest and Margaret River. The downed Cessna plane was recently acquired by the company, and it arrived on New Year’s Day after flying from NSW. It remains registered to its previous owner Whitsunday Air Services Pty Ltd.
