Strong current took child trying to cross The Entrance channel with father and three younger brothers
A 43-year-old man had been crossing the channel between an estuary and the ocean from the northern side of a location known as The Entrance, with his four boys, aged 11, nine, seven and three. The eldest child was swept into the ocean.
“While two bystanders looked after the other three children, the man tried to reach the boy but was unsuccessful,” police said. “Lots of people try and move across that channel, it is not advised though,” he told reporters on Monday. “We have lost people in the past with ther tide coming in, but it’s mostly when the tide’s going out that people have trouble and get washed out,” he said.Piddington said officers didn’t know exactly why the family had been crossing the channel, but said it was “a shortcut … from the North Entrance to The Entrance beaches.”
