Cardless cash facilities are the latest twist on a scam catching out taxpayers and small businesses.
The tax office has warned the festive season is prime time for scammers, with a crafty new twist on a classic scheme giving criminals access to bank accounts via 'cardless cash' withdrawals.
A taxpayer is contacted and told they have a debt. Once they are convinced the debt is legitimate, the scammer asks them to set up cardless cash facilities with their bank. Cardless cash functions let users take money out from ATMs using codes sent to a mobile, rather than needing a debit card.
Last year $2 million was lost to scammers between November and January as scam activity spiked. More than $2 million has been lost so far this calendar year.
