A $10 million refresh has restored not only the grandeur of this 1888 building but aims to put its quiet seaside location on the tourist map, too.
Walking up the hill from Portarlington Pier, where the 70-minute ferry service from Melbourne’s Docklands arrives twice daily, you can’t miss the handsome edifice of the three-storey Portarlington Grand Hotel, a Victorian-era establishment with dashing wrought-iron balconies and an ever-so-slightly wonky tower.. It’s grander than ever now too, thanks to a $10 million renovation that included restoring the building, upgrading the interiors and adding a beer garden.
“We looked to provide a contemporary nature to the design without the hotel losing its traditional feel,” says Techne Architecture + Interior Design co-director Nick Travers. The restoration was made easier when some of the original lacework was discovered in a shed. But new pieces also had to be cast to complete the work. At the same time, Techne decided not to reinstate the original wide verandah but to keep it in line with the balconies, for a cleaner street profile. The result: gorgeous water views looking out across Port Phillip and the dark granite ridges of the You Yangs mountain range.
A renovated bedroom with balcony access. Melbourne specialist painters Scanlan & Makers were called in to give the interiors a textured finish.
