Second council joins battle to stop prestigious golf course renovation | michaelkoziol
A second council has joined the fight to stop Sydney’s most prestigious golf club redeveloping its greens and felling 600 trees, just as the matter comes to a head before the Land and Environment Court after a three-year battle.
Waverley Labor councillor Steven Lewis said while there was no evidence at this stage, felling the trees was likely to impact water flow and accumulation nearby, given it was prone to flooding. “We want an investigation as to what the impact may be,” he said. Royal Sydney’s two courses are on the left while the smaller Woollahra Golf Club, a public course, is on the bottom right., concluded the project will improve the land’s biodiversity because there is currently “no strategic management of flora and fauna for conservation purposes” on the golf course.
The 58-hectare site includes an 18-hole championship course – which has hosted the Australian Open 15 times, most recently in 2016 – a nine-hole “centenary course” and other facilities. The proposed renovations, with an estimated cost of $17.5 million, pertain to the championship course.Credit:Woollahra Golf Club, a public nine-hole course, is located on an adjacent but separate lot.
