Fortunately, the passengers aboard had crossed the southern border into Texas and all have permission to be in the United States for the time being. The travelers are originally from Nicaragua, Cuba, Ecuador, Peru and the Dominican Republic. The Inquirer reported that more than 20 immigrant leaders, city officials and volunteers met the bus where some immediately handed out blankets. Additionally, about 30 people were quickly transferred to a waiting SEPTA bus, to be moved to a city welcome center in North Philadelphia.
Immigrant advocates had wondered if the arrival of two buses back-to-back meant that more would be coming this week, perhaps even on Thanksgiving. Gov. Abbott had said the effort was to bring “much-needed relief” to Texas’ border communities and bragged that he delivered thousands of immigrants to New York City, Chicago and Washington, D.C. Last week he added Philadelphia to that list of destinations.
“At that price,” he tweeted, “Texas could have bought each person multiple first-class plane tickets.”
