Second offshore earthquake causes shaking in San Diego County [Breaking]
For the second time in less than a day, an offshore fault has produced an earthquake that caused shaking in parts of San Diego County, according to the US Geological Survey and San Diego State University.
The latest temblor occurred at 9:48 a.m. Friday, beneath the sea floor northwest of San Clemente Island and south of Santa Catalina Island. “This appears to have occurred on the San Clemente fault system,” said Tom Rockwell, a SDSU geologist. “It’s on the same larger system that produced Thursday’s quake. But it doesn’t seem like these quakes are related.”broke at 9:30 p.m. Thursday on the Aqua Blanca fault west of Ensenada, Mexico, generating shaking that was widely noticed in coastal San Diego County.
Rockwell said that Friday’s quake off San Clemente Island, “Is just a 4. It is unlikely that it will lead to something larger. But it could happen.”
