MSS Security was guarding the Stamford Plaza - the hotel at the heart of one of the largest current COVID-19 clusters - and until Saturday also provided security guards at the nine housing estates in North Melbourne and Flemington.
The security company linked to the biggest coronavirus outbreak in a quarantine hotel also provided guards for the North Melbourne and Flemington public housing estates now under a hard lockdown.
The company was also on watch at the Park Royal hotel at Melbourne Airport, where a health worker but not security staff acquired the virus. But security company owners and guards working in the industry, who asked not to be named for fear of jeopardising future work, said subcontractors working for MSS Security may have worked at quarantine hotels and at towers now locked down in North Melbourne and Flemington.
However, the government said in a statement last week that it had expected all subcontractors to have complied with rules around physical distancing and the use of personal protection equipment. The drastic move on Saturday to ring-fence nine public housing towers attracted further criticism of the government’s handling of the crisis.
