Recently unsealed court documents show, though, that the telecom hired a third-party firm as part of its response, and the firm paid the attackers about $200,000 for exclusive access to the trove in the hopes of containing the crisis. Paying hackers through third parties is a known but controversial tactic for dealing with ransomware attacks and digital extortion.
