An Illinois teenager made history Thursday when she became the youngest American woman to summit Mount Everest.
Lucy Westlake, 18, successfully reached the peak of Mount Everest around 5:40 a.m. Nepali time, according to a post the Naperville, Illinois, teenager made on Instagram.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lucy Westlake Prior to the treacherous journey, Westlake shared the goal of her Everest expedition in an interview. She wants to inspire other young women and girls to seek their own dreams and adventures, she said."My life's mantra is 'limits are perceived,' so I love pushing myself to my very limit and discovering what my body and mind can do. So what better way to do it than climb the highest mountain in the world.
